Tuina (Tui Na): Oriental Bodywork Therapy Increases Energy

Tui Na Chinese Bodywork TherapyFlowTuina (Tui Na) is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 2,000 years. It uses the traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of Qi through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation. Through the application of manual therapy and manipulation techniques it seeks to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi through the system of channels and collaterals, allowing the body to naturally heal itself.

The History of Tui Na

The first reference to this type of external treatment was called "anwu", then the more common name became "anmo". It was subsequently popularized and spread to many other countries such as Korea and Japan.

As the art of manual therapy continued to develop and gain structure, it merged (around 1600 AD) with another technique called tui na. At that time, this technique was used in preparing the warriors for battle.. It was also around this time that the different systems of tui na became popular, each with its own sets of rules and methods.

Today, the term Tui na has replaced anmo within China and in the West. The term anmo is still used in some surrounding countries such as Japan..

The Flow of Energy

Imbalanced energy can have many causes-fatigue, aging, illness, excess weight, unhealthy lifestyle. Mental and emotional stresses, for example, have an immediate effect on our energy's smooth and uninhibited flow. This restricted flow leads to muscle tension, which further restricts both blood and energy flow.

The flow of energy affects all the body's circulatory systems, not only the blood, but nerves, hormones, and lymph. The massaging action of Tui Na unblocks our energy, bringing it to the surface, dispersing it, and restoring a healthy, balanced flow. Once energy is balanced and flowing:

  1. The body and brain communicate efficiently through the nervous system

  2. The endocrine system more efficiently produces the hormones it needs

  3. The lymphatic system more effectively defends against disease

A typical Tui Na session uses various strokes along energy channels, as well as gentle shaking, stretching, and joint movements. This stimulates and releases the flow of energy, which helps balance your physical and emotional systems
